13. Execute effectively and efficiently

Execute effectively and efficiently

Having a brilliant and inspirational vision and exceptional communication abilities, will count for very little if the leader is unable to execute her / his strategy effectively and efficiently.

Effective and efficient execution means knowing with absolute clarity what things you should do to create the outcomes you want,  and what things you should say “NO” to, and then single-mindedly focusing on doing those things.

Effective and efficient execution includes the ability to use your own time in a focused and outcome-oriented way, mobilizing your team to achieve your desired outcomes,  staying on top of your own to-do list and those of your team members, and most importantly avoiding procrastination and saying NO to things that do not support your desired outcomes.

Effective and efficient execution

Below are some important steps you can take to improve your execution skills.

1. Determine with absolute clarity what excellent execution means to you, within the context of the roles and responsibilities of your job, your boss’s expectations, your company’s organization structure and its culture.

2. Invest time and energy in learning effective and efficient execution practices which you still need to master. Do not be satisfied with on-the-job learning only, take the time to participate in formal training that will help you to build the skills and capabilities you need. Investing in yourself is he most important investment you can make.

3. Block time in your calendar for thinking about issues of strategic importance to you.  and for your professional and personal development. Be uncompromising about this time. Don’t let any other priorities take over this time.

4. Schedule time for relaxation and fitness activities into your daily and weekly routines. These activities will give you more energy and stamina, will help you better handle stressful situations, and will help you develop your cognitive abilities.

5. Make sure you sleep 7 hours per night. Adopting work habits that allow you to sleep just 4 hours per night will damage your brain over time. Sadly you would not know about it until it is too late.

6. Seek insightful feedback on your execution abilities and act on the feedback you receive.

In this module you will learn how to:

a.   Determine what excellent execution means to you

b.   Acquire and habitualize processes and techniques that will make you a more effective and efficient professional

c.   Resist the temptation to deal with the daily grind in favor of investing in yourself. Carve out dedicated time for strategic thinking and personal growth

d.   Make time, amidst your busy life, for family and friends, relaxation, fitness activities, and sleep.
