Drink Healthy

Module 5 of The Holistic Wellness Program

Drink Healthy

Remaining well hydrated is essential to good health. Good hydration is linked with increased energy levels, more energy, less hunger, and better skin. Nearly half of adults don’t consume enough water. As we age, sense of thirst declines.

As a general rule, once you’re thirsty, you’re likely already dehydrated.

Module-5-of-Holistic-Wellness-Program

1) Drink roughly 8 cups of liquid per day. Although the actual requirements for liquid consumption are not well defined and likely differ person to person, your goal should be to drink enough that you need to urinate roughly every two hours and your urine is the color of pale lemonade as opposed to apple juice. For most people, roughly 8 cups of liquid a day seems to be appropriate (more if you exercise vigorously).

 2) Incorporate teas.

a) Green tea: renowned for its antioxidant value, it has been shown to prevent the risk of multiple cancers, decrease cardiovascular disease and diabetes risks, aid in liver detoxification, boost metabolism and weight loss, and be relaxing to the nervous system. Aim for 3-5 cups a day. Oolong and white tea also offer some benefits.

b) Herbal teas: many have wonderful health benefits from calming the nervous system (lemon balm) to aiding digestion (chamomile and peppermint) to reducing blood pressure (hibiscus). Adding a tea bag to your water is a wonderful way to enhance health. Brew the tea hot but feel free to drink it cold.

3) Alcohol: while a moderate amount of alcohol (and particularly red wine) is likely good for our health, more than two alcoholic beverages a day for a male and more than one for a female, consumed on a regular basis, increase the risk of multiple health conditions.
